The information in this post has been updated for 2024.
In a recent blog post, Aaron Keller, the developer of Overwatch 2, stated that the game’s balance is the “best it’s been since the launch of OW2”. Balancing in Overwatch 2 has been a controversial topic, with players complaining about Roadhog’s ability to “one-shot” most characters, and Sojourn becoming a hotly debated hero.
Keller discussed the hero balance and matchmaking of Overwatch 2, mentioning that the dev team has heard positive feedback about the game’s balance. Keller himself stated, “We feel that the start of Season 3 is in a much better state of balance than the start of Season 2.”
Overwatch Cavalry reported on this blog post on Twitter, allowing players to share their feedback. However, opinions on the topic vary, as every player’s experience is different.
Some players are frustrated with the current balance, with one user commenting that Sojourn still does 195 headshots with no buffs, and another stating that Hammond needs a buff reverted. However, other players are happy with the current balance, just like the developers.
“A player happy with the state of the game comments, “Honestly this is probably one of the best balance states for the game in a while.” Another player echoes this sentiment with the reply, “I actually think it hit a sort of balance atm, no one character feels too oppressive.”
Keller also revealed changes coming to the matchmaking in the same blog post. He concluded that more changes would be coming in the next mid-season patch to further improve the game’s balance and matchmaking.
