League of Legends players plead with Riot to implement a crucial adjustment to the AFK penalty system

The information in this post has been updated for 2024.

League of Legends gamers have proposed a new idea to enhance the gameplay experience significantly. Rather than punishing players who go AFK without any consideration, the community suggests that certain exceptions should be made for such players. The suggestion was made on League’s subreddit and received positive feedback from many players. The general consensus is to excuse players who leave the game due to reasons beyond their control, such as power outages.

According to a post on the subreddit, “I think it would be perfectly reasonable if we had the option to pardon him [a player who lost their power for 15 minutes], after all, it’s only us who he affected, and not the algorithm that gave him the penalty.”

Other players emphasized that if a player is communicative, does not intentionally feed, and behaves respectfully, it would be unfair to penalize them for something beyond their control.

Currently, players who disconnect from the game have only two minutes to reconnect before receiving a penalty. This strict policy makes many players reluctant to return if they were disconnected for more than two minutes. Allowing players to be pardoned could make them more willing to return, leading to a better gaming experience for everyone.

It remains to be seen whether Riot Games will heed the community’s suggestions as they have a mixed record of doing so.
